Love
of Everything is essentially the solo project of Chicago’s
Bobby Burg, but not in the sense one would typically expect. While
Burg is a current member of bands JOAN OF ARC and MAKE BELIEVE,
Love of Everything is an altogether different animal. The songs
flow from him, and he physically creates much of the music, but
nearly every song boasts able contributions from Burg’s coterie
of superlatively talented friends working in a dizzying number of
combinations. With this eclectic approach to pop, Love of Everything
really is a “one-man band with an emotional life of ten people”
(All Music Guide). Following less-than-perfect experiences with
band membership, Burg decided to take on recording and creating
full-band music on his own in 2000. When his first songs as Love
of Everything were recorded to video-tape and released as The Green
CDR, he began performing locally around Chicago with Matt Clark
(JOAN OF ARC, PINEBENDER, RABBIT RABBIT) on guitar. At first the
two were assisted by a drummer, then with live drum loops and homemade
instruments. After four years, a 16-country tour, and three self-released
recordings, Love of Everything has evolved to include an incredible
amalgamation of the Chicago avant-garde. 2003 brought Burg’s
independent label debut, Total Eclipse of the Heart, on Brilliante
Records. Recorded by Bob Weston (SEBADOH, ARCHERS OF LOAF), this
lavish first record brought out in full those elements that Burg’s
self-released pieces had only touched upon.
The follow-up, Handjob
Community, brings in Burg’s friends from STORM &
STRESS, RAINER MARIA, THE RACE, MAKE BELIEVE, EUPHONE, JOAN OF ARC,
OWLS, and PINEBENDER to extend his experimental but heart-warming
pop rock to the next level. To call it “cute”—as
it has been at times—is an understatement of its touching
and sometimes jarring sentiment. All sixteen songs stick in your
head, as the record moves in a decidedly singular and progressive
direction in perfect continuity, pulling the listener gradually
uphill toward its energetic conclusion.
Love of Everything tours endlessly, and will tour through much of
2005 in support of the record. Two seven inch recordings follow,
one as a double record on Polyvinyl Records split with JOAN OF ARC,
OWEN, and MAKE BELIEVE, and one on Record Label, split with Phil
Elvrum’s MOUNT EERIE.
