The City On Film had its humble beginnings in 1998 as the solo project
for Robert Nanna during an extended break between tours. With a
smoother and sincerely softer version of his previous work as the
lead singer/guitarist of bands such as BRAID (Polyvinyl Record Co.)
and HEY MERCEDES (Vagrant Records), Nanna continued his efforts,
even going as far as to record a 6-song EP in a Salt Lake City hotel
room while on the road.
Following the
final Hey Mercedes show in early 2005, Nanna completed The City
On Film’s first full-length, full-band recording, In Formal
Introduction, released in June 2005 on Grand Theft Autumn Records.
Showcasing the ever personal yet relatable songwriting skills fans
have grown to love, he’s layered his unmistakable vocal strength
and witty wordplay with a new set of instrumentation. Drawing comparisons
from the likes of Elliott Smith and Bright Eyes to Jawbox and The
Killers, The City On Film’s freshman release solidifies a
promising legacy to Nanna, already an indie staple.
American Diary,
Nanna’s next excursion under under The City On Film handle,
once again brings in a full band to back him up, including support
from members of MINUS THE BEAR, as well as a dog and some broken
bottles. The course of the six varied, flowing songs, bookended
by the mirrored tracks, “Mary, I'm Ready” and “Conclusion,”
proves more definitively than ever before Nanna’s songwriting
prowess, as it melds infectious pop melody, dreamy introspection,
and even a bit of country stomp through different tracks.
Prior to releasing
a full-length or establishing a solid record label, The City On
Film managed to draw impressive crowds on its multiple headlining
tours throughout the US. Coming off of his UK stint with OWEN (Polyvinyl
Records), The City On Film joins JEFF HANSON (Kill Rock Stars) on
a 21-city tour through early September and a mid-September run with
friends MINUS THE BEAR. Good shows, those will be. |
